Antique Step Back Cupboard in a Custom Color

On Fridays, we like to select a popular refinished piece of furniture from our Move Mountains with Milk Paint Facebook Group.

We know you’re going to love this antique step back cupboard and the custom color recipe that Heather of Flea Market Chic Decor whipped up!

An Incredible Impulse Buy

Heather purchased this piece a couple years ago on an impulse. The online listing for it didn’t have the best photos. They were taken in a storage unit with bad lighting and the piece was unassembled. Despite that, Heather’s furniture senses were tingling and she knew it was special!

Heather’s Custom Color Recipe

Heather mixed up the most beautiful shade of green/blue to refinish her step back cupboard. Her recipe is 3 parts Shutter Gray + 2 parts Linen + 1 part Lucketts Green. If you’d like to see more custom color recipes to try, visit this blog post for a whole list!

As she painted it on, she knew it would show off her amazing ironstone collection once it was finished. As she worked, her Milk Paint crackled, crazed and chipped here and there. This was a perfect result for such an old piece!

Worth the Wait

Believe it or not, Heather had not seen the step back cabinet fully assembled, until after she painted it! She had always worked with it in two pieces. As she put it together and staged it with her incredible ironstone collection, the wait was totally worth it!

Oh, and that chandelier? She drove across town to grab it…FOR FREE! Let’s all give her a round of amazing-antique-find applause!

Cleaning her FREE chandelier was an all-day job, but it was so worth it. The crystals plays off the primitive cabinet so well in a very “Miss Mustard Seed” fashion.

By the way, the reason why her cupboard is called a “step back”, is because the top sits back and isn’t flush with the bottom piece. Clever, huh?
