Kid-Friendly DIY Easter Eggs

Looking for a fun Easter craft to do with kids? We have the perfect project. DIY hand-painted eggs are perfect for egg hunting!

So, what makes this project kid-friendly? Our MilkPaint™ is 100% natural, eco-friendly, organic, non-toxic, and contains no VOCs. It is made from four 100% natural ingredients that you can actually pronounce - casein (milk protein), lime (calcium hydroxide), natural pigments, and plant-based filler. This makes our MilkPaint™ food-contact-safe and child-safe.

Supplies

Painting the Eggs

Lay out paper mache eggs, separating the tops from the bottoms - this will make it easier to paint and prevent the eggs from sealing shut.

Next, mix your MilkPaint™. We recommend an adult does the mixing because the lime (calcium hydroxide) can be an irritant to the eyes or skin when handling the powder. It would be similar to a child getting lemon juice in their eyes or on their skin.

Paint 2-3 coats of MilkPaint™. We found that Sunkissed, Aqua Sky, and our custom Apricot all needed 3 coats for even coverage because the paper mache absorbs much of the 1st coat.

*Custom Apricot recipe: 5 parts Sunkissed to 1/4 part Tricycle.

Let the paint fully dry. We let our eggs dry for about 2 hours before we began adding the designs. That prevents the paper mache egg from collapsing while handling from being damp.

Adding Designs

We used a chalkboard marker to add designs to our eggs. You can also use a small brush and MilkPaint™ to paint your designs. However, we found that a chalkboard marker gave us more control.

We chose four designs: flowers, hearts, wavy lines, and x’s. Let your child’s imagination run wild, and have them create their own designs. Think bunnies, dinosaurs, smiley faces, etc.

Sealing the Eggs

We used MilkCoat™ Low Sheen/ Satin to seal our eggs because we wanted them to be more durable and wipeable. However, you can also use MilkOil™, MilkWax™, or MilkWax-ECO™ to finish your eggs.

When applying the MilkCoat™ over the eggs, we made sure to dab/lightly with your brush to ensure the chalk marker designs don’t smear.  Also, do not overbrush the top coat, as that can also cause your designs to smudge/smear. Let the finish fully dry (1-2 hours).

Custom Easter Basket

We also painted a raw wicker basket in the color of the month, Lucketts Green. You can find lots of baskets at your local thrift store or repaint an old one that you already have! We lightly brushed it with paint to give it more of a washed look. *Tip: when painting wicker cane, use a damp brush to brush out any clumps or drips that get between the caning. If you are painting a colored/stained and sealed basket, we recommend adding MilkGrip™ Indoor/Bonding Agent. We sealed our basket with MilkCoat™ Low Sheen/Satin. And once again, finished with a damp brush to work the product between the canes.

Biodegradable

Guess what?! This project is biodegradable because we used paper mache eggs and MilkPaint™.  These eggs can be thrown away when they get worn out, and you don’t have to worry about adding more plastic to our landfills!

Use Your Eggs

Now it's time to use the fun eggs you and your kids created! The best part about these eggs is that they open, allowing you to put candy or small prizes inside for an Easter egg hunt.

They also look cute, added to Easter baskets, or used as a table centerpiece!
