Black Masculine Dresser Makeover with Milk Paint

Today is all about a masculine dresser refresh using milk paint. It's been way too long since I painted a piece of furniture, and I was getting the itch to dip my brush into my favorite milk paint. Come see how 30 minutes and some paint in the color Typewriter can take a small dresser to the next level. And the best news is that if you are new to painting furniture, then this little refresh will be just what you need to ease yourself into painting pieces of furniture.

I'm Kelly from the blog, The Tattered Pew, and I am in love with two things, simple little projects that make your home pretty and Miss Mustard Seed's® Milk Paint. Ok, I also love my crazy family, copious amounts of coffee, flea markets, and my Jesus. Not in that order, though! I'm so excited to hang out with you all here today on the blog!

Masculine Dresser Refresh Using Milk Paint

I can't wait to show you this dresser I found over on Facebook Marketplace and how I used Miss Mustard Seed's® Milk Paint to give it a bit of a refresh.

The plan was to put it in our teenage son's room in the basement. He had no storage and was in need of some desperately. This dresser was only $40 and wasn't bad, but it needed a bit of a facelift.

A masculine teenage boy, friendly makeover if you will.

I decided to give it a bit of a refresh using the color Typewriter. I have not used this paint color before, but I have seen it many times and always admired it. Plus, black is a classic color that you can never go wrong with. Typewriter has a soft time worn look to it that lends itself to a masculine feel.

Let me walk you through this simple refresh!

Supplies Needed

To refresh a dresser yourself, here is what you will need:

Mix that Paint

The first thing I always do before any project is mix up the paint. Since this is a smaller project and just a refresh, I was able to use a small amount of paint. I mixed equal parts paint with equal parts water by combining 1/3 cup of paint and 1/3 cup of water.

Using my favorite handheld mixer, I was able to quickly mix up the paint. Once it was mixed, I then added two drops of MilkMix-EZ™ to help with the bubbles and the foam when mixing occurs. This is my favorite product that MMS Milk Paint offers, besides their incredible paint. If you haven't used it before, it is a game changer, and I can't recommend it enough.

The Prep Work

Once my paint was mixed, it was time to get the dresser ready.

As I mentioned above, this is a very simple refresh using paint. I decided to paint only the drawer fronts of this dresser. Did you catch that? I decided to paint just the fronts of the drawer.

This means for the prep work, I was able to leave the dresser in my son's room and just bring the drawers up to paint. That's it!

I simply brought them out to my backyard, removed the knobs, and got to work.

Painting the Drawers in Typewriter

I grabbed my paint and did one coat of Typewriter on each of the drawer faces only.

I brushed on the paint going in the direction of the grain of the wood on the drawer. By the time I had one coat of paint on each dresser, they were all dry. There were a few streaks and spots I missed, so I decided to give each drawer a second coat.

This was the perfect amount of paint, and the drawer fronts looked perfect. This paint goes on so smoothly and evenly. I even had some leftover paint that I am saving in my fridge for another project.

Setting Up & Staging the Dresser

I hauled the drawers back downstairs to his bedroom, and the last step of this project was deciding which knobs would look best on it. Would you believe me if I told you that I took other knobs off of other dressers around our home to see if they would work?

Sure did. A girl has to have choices!

I tried the white knobs from my Boxwood green dresser and the gold knobs from my daughter's dresser in her bedroom. None of them ended up working, so I decided to stick with the shiny black knobs that came with the dresser.

And guess what, they look amazing! And so does the masculine refresh I gave this very cool dresser featuring the color Typewriter. I love the two-tone vibe, and I hope our son does too. It took his bedroom up a notch, for sure!

Masculine Dresser Refresh Using Milk Paint

Now that the masculine refresh on the dresser is done and I now remember how good it feels to paint furniture, I can't wait for my next project! I also have to say that I might have a new favorite color, Typewriter.

Hopefully, this little project has inspired you and has left you knowing that you don't need to be intimidated by painting furniture. Miss Mustard Seed’s® Milk paint is so easy to work with and, honestly, my favorite paint for projects. If I can do it, so can you… and in less than 30 minutes!

So, what do you have that could use a little refresh? What color would you use?
