Creating A Non-Toxic, Child-Safe Nursery With MilkPaint™

MMSMP owner, Brenda Hess, had the opportunity to decorate a nursery for a new baby girl that was arriving in her family. Brenda wanted to create a nursery with soft pastel tones that was child-safe and non-toxic.

Using all MMS MilkPaint™ products, she was able to provide this precious baby girl with a nursery that is as beautiful as it is safe. All of the surfaces she painted and refinished are scrubbable and washable (a MUST whenever little kids are involved). Because our MilkPaint™ contains no VOC’s, Brenda was able to work inside safely and with a clear conscience.

Let’s take a dive into all of the pieces and projects she created! Maybe you’ll be inspired to create a project for a little one in your life.

The Crib

The centerpiece of any nursery is the crib. This one was painted a sunny happy yellow called Sunkissed. Not only is this a brand new color in our collection, but it’s hitting the shelves of our retailers as we type!

The crib is sealed with our MilkWax-ECO™ Natural, providing an incredibly durable finish. Better yet, it’s food-contact safe, making it ideal for a surface that a baby may teethe on. It’s non-toxic and dries to a very hard finish. This makes it washable and scrubbable.

Changing Table & Storage Baskets

The changing table in the nursery was painted in Sunkissed to match the crib. It looks so perfect against the chalkboard wall, doesn’t it?

The wall was painted in a chalkboard mix of 3 parts Boxwood + 2 parts Ink Blue + Linen. Our MilkPaint™ can easily be rolled onto a wall for easy application! It will take 2-3 coats to achieve full coverage, and make sure you “season” the wall by rubbing chalk all over it and wiping it away. This will help prevent your designs from being burned into the surface.

The sweet animal prints above the table were painted in Arabesque. This ties into the dresser and linens on the adjacent wall (which we’ll talk about in a second). There’s a set above the crib as well!

Diapers and other must-have’s have been conveniently stored in these beautiful natural baskets. They’ve been dyed with Arabesque for a soft pink touch. Brenda used a small amount of MilkGrip™ - Indoor / Bonding Agent for a full-coverage look. These handy baskets were then sealed with MilkWax-ECO™ Natural.

Dresser

The Arabesque touches continue over to the adorable chest of drawers by the window. The frosted glass knobs add a nice feminine touch, don’t you think?

The little step stool was also finished in Arabesque. As this little one grows, she’s going to need a step up! A few coats of MilkWax-ECO™ Natural ensured that the stool would hold up to little feet.

Curtains & Crib Skirt

Did you notice the curtains behind the dresser? They were stamped with a Rose Toile Decor Stamp from Iron Orchid Designs!

Brenda created these curtains by mixing up Arabesque. Then, she dipped her stamp into the paint and created a pattern on the fabric. Once the MilkPaint™ was dry, she set it with an iron on the steam setting.

Rocking Horse

Once this little girl gets a bit bigger, she can ride this wooden rocking horse to her heart’s content!

Brenda ordered the horse raw and painted it in Farmhouse White. Just like every other furniture project in the room, it was sealed with MilkWax-ECO™ Natural so it will hold up to miles and miles of pony rides!

Other Decor Accents

Once the major pieces for the nursery were painted and finished, the room was topped off with the cutest decor accents.
