Farmhouse Style with MilkPaint™

How to Achieve Farmhouse Style with MilkPaint™

Farmhouse style is easy to achieve with MMS MilkPaint™. Farmhouse style can be broken into more specific styles, today we are going to talk more about traditional farmhouse and modern farmhouse and how to utilize MilkPaint™ in these design styles.

Traditional Farmhouse

Farmhouse style is an interior design style that is simple and rustic. This is a cozy and stylish decorating style that you may be familiar with if you have ever watched Fixer Upper.

Classic Ticking Bedding

So what are some elements that you can include in your home to achieve the traditional farmhouse style? Classic ticking stripe bedding is a popular element in traditional farmhouse style. It gives a cozy feel to any bedroom and comes in many colors, the most popular are gray and red.

Ticking bedding is a great way to add a traditional farmhouse feel to your home.

This dark gray ticking bedding is paired with a rustic headboard and white side tables.

Do you remember Brenda’s bedroom makeover? She uses red ticking bedding paired with an old door turned headboard to bring the traditional farmhouse style feel to her room. This headboard was painted in Farmhouse White chipped back to Typewriter.

Grain Sack Pillows

Another element of traditional farmhouse is grain sack pillows. Grain sack pillows are made of a heavy linen fabric (used to hold grain, wheat, or flour) and often feature a grainery stipe or an image/logo. These pillows are a great example of grainery stripe pillows. Ink blue and Tricycle are similar to the colors in these pillows and are great accent colors for farmhouse decorating.

Grainery strip pillows pair well with stenciled/stamped pillows. These types of pillows often feature a farm or homestead logo.

Brenda paired these Homestead pillows with green quilted and red ticking pillows for a charming farmhouse feel. We love that the quilted pillows look like our Lucketts Green!

Did you know you can create your own grain sack pillows using MilkPaint™ and stencils or tape? Check out this tutorial to learn how to paint on pillowcases.

Chippy Furniture

Of course we can’t forget chippy and distressed furniture and decor, which are staples of traditional farmhouse style. In Brenda’s room, she focused on creating a chippy farmhouse look for her bedroom set. Her headboard, dressers, and nightstands are all chippy! Her furniture is painted in Farmhouse White, chipped back to Typewriter. Here’s a look at her dresser.

Not into the chippy look? Light distressing or a smooth finish may be your way to go. This piece by Sky Lark House is painted in French Enamel and has minor distressing, which is paired with chippy decor pieces to achieve the farmhouse look.

Farmhouse Collection

Guess what? We have a color collection that serves as perfect inspiration for creating a traditional farmhouse look!

The Farmhouse Collection

Next, we’ll take a look at how to decorating in a more modern way while still achieving the farmhouse charm.

Modern Farmhouse

So , what is modern farmhouse? Barn and Willow defines Modern farmhouse: “Modern farmhouse combines the sleek clean lines of contemporary design with the cozy farmhouse aesthetic to create a uniquely fresh take on the country living inspired style.”

Wood Furniture

Let’s talk about popular elements of modern farmhouse. Reclaimed wood and wood furniture are very popular. For example, this reclaimed wood entry table is paired with more modern decor to create a modern farmhouse look.

Not all wood furniture has to be made of reclaimed wood to fit this style. The dressers and bench used in this room are sealed wood. This gives a natural feel to this bedroom.

Did you know that you can use MilkOil™ Indoor/ Hemp Seed Oil, MilkWax™ Clear, and MilkWax-ECO™ Natural to seal raw wood furniture and decor? Anna from Sky Lark House sealed these raw wood pieces with MilkWax™ Clear. MilkWax™ helps to preserve the wood and protect it from stains and wear.

Black Accents

Black accents are another major element of modern farmhouse decorating. Black accents include pieces painted in black, black metal accents, and black decor. This bedroom below uses a black metal bed frame, black knobs on the dresser, and black wall lamps. These black elements combined with a neutral color palette and wood elements create a modern farmhouse look.

This modern farmhouse dining room utilizes black in the statement chandelier and black chairs and stools. Typewriter is perfect for painting your own dining room stools and chairs in black.

Brenda added black to her bedroom through shelving and black decor to add a more contemporary look to her room.

Black can also be used to create a statement piece. This distressed cabinet by Nicole of Thirteen hundred North is the perfect example of a distressed modern farmhouse piece. Learn more about how Nicole created this piece here.

Here is a neutral color palette to spark your inspiration for creating a modern farmhouse look.
